At Phoenix Park Nursery Giltbrook, we recognise that big feelings are a natural and important part of a child’s development. Emotions like excitement, sadness and everything in between are valid, even when children don’t yet have the words to explain them. As we mark Children’s Mental Health Week (9–15 February), we’re proud to offer a calm, consistent environment built on trust and understanding – where every child feels emotionally safe and supported as they grow.

A Safe Space to Feel Secure

At nursery, calm and consistency are key. Children thrive when they know what to expect and who to rely on. A familiar routine, gentle voices and warm, responsive care help create an environment where children feel secure – and when children feel safe, they’re better able to express themselves and grow.

Recognising and Naming Emotions

One of the most important parts of early mental health support is helping children recognise what they’re feeling. In nursery, this is woven into daily life:

  • Practitioners use simple language to label feelings: “You look a bit sad today – would you like a cuddle?”
  • Books, songs and stories offer opportunities to talk about emotions in safe, relatable ways
  • Visual prompts and emotion cards help non-verbal children communicate how they feel

This everyday approach builds self-awareness and lays the groundwork for emotional regulation.

Trusted Relationships Make All the Difference

Children need to feel seen, heard and understood – and relationships with key staff help make that happen. Over time, these consistent relationships build trust, giving children the confidence to explore new challenges while knowing they have a secure base to return to.

In moments of frustration, sadness or excitement, nursery staff guide children through their emotions with patience and care. It’s these relationships that help children begin to manage their feelings with confidence.

Everyday Moments That Build Resilience

Supporting children’s mental health doesn’t just happen in planned activities – it’s in the everyday moments that happen throughout the day:

  • Comforting a child who misses home
  • Celebrating small wins, like sharing a toy or waiting for a turn
  • Helping children bounce back after disappointment
  • Encouraging independence while offering gentle reassurance

These moments help build emotional strength and show children that all feelings are valid – and manageable.

Giving Children the Best Start

Good mental health in the early years isn’t about being happy all the time – it’s about helping children feel secure, supported and ready to face the world with confidence. Nursery offers a gentle, understanding space where children can be themselves, build strong relationships and grow emotionally day by day.
