At Phoenix Park Nursery Giltbrook, we’re excited to participate in British Sign Language (BSL) Week from 17th to 23rd March 2025. This annual event, organised by the British Deaf Association (BDA), commemorates the UK Government’s recognition of BSL as an official language in 2003.

Engaging the Senses with BSL

Our nursery is committed to sensory-rich learning experiences, and BSL Week provides a perfect opportunity to explore language through touch, sight, and movement.

Our BSL Week Activities

Throughout the week, we’ll incorporate BSL into our sensory-focused activities:

  • Creating tactile BSL alphabet cards
  • Learning simple signs through movement and gesture games
  • Hosting a special sensory BSL storytelling session

Benefits of Early BSL Exposure

Learning BSL through sensory play can:

  • Enhance visual-spatial skills
  • Improve fine motor coordination
  • Boost cognitive development
  • Promote inclusivity and understanding of diverse communication needs

Involving Families

We encourage parents and carers to join us in this sensory language journey:

  • Practice basic signs at home using household textures
  • Share any family experiences with sign language or sensory communication
  • Join our end-of-week BSL sensory showcase (details to follow)

Beyond BSL Week

Our commitment to inclusive, sensory-rich communication will continue beyond this week. We’ll incorporate BSL elements into our daily sensory activities, fostering an environment where all forms of communication are valued and explored.
Join us in embracing the beauty of British Sign Language through a world of sensory experiences!
