As World Book Day approaches on Thursday, 6th March 2025, we at Phoenix Park Nursery Giltbrook are excited to celebrate the power of stories in a uniquely sensory way. This year’s theme, ‘Read Your Way’, aligns perfectly with our belief that every child experiences books differently.

Reading: A Multi-Sensory Adventure

At Giltbrook, we’ve reimagined the reading experience. We believe that books aren’t just for eyes and ears – they’re for hands too! Our approach turns story time into a full-body adventure, engaging children on multiple levels and creating lasting memories.

Touch and Feel

We use textured pages and props to bring stories to life. Imagine feeling the ‘scratchy’ beard of a storybook wizard or the ‘smooth’ scales of a dragon!

Sounds and Music

We incorporate sound effects and music to create immersive storytelling environments. The gentle lapping of waves might accompany a seaside story, while jungle sounds transport children to wild adventures.

Benefits of Our Sensory Approach

This multi-sensory method offers unique advantages:

  1. Enhanced Memory: When multiple senses are engaged, children are more likely to remember and recall stories.
  2. Increased Engagement: Even children who struggle with traditional reading often find this approach captivating.
  3. Language Development: Associating words with sensory experiences can boost vocabulary retention.
  4. Emotional Connections: Physical sensations can help children connect more deeply with characters and plots.
  5. Inclusive Learning: This approach caters to different learning styles and abilities.

Bringing Sensory Reading Home

We encourage parents to try sensory reading at home. Here are some ideas:

  • Use different voices and sound effects when reading aloud.
  • Create simple props or find household items that relate to the story.
  • Engage in post-story activities that involve the senses, like crafting or cooking related to the tale.

Our World Book Day Plans

This World Book Day, we’re transforming our nursery into a ‘Sensory Story World’. Each room will become a different book setting, complete with themed sensory experiences. Children will journey through these literary landscapes, engaging with stories in a whole new way.
